Cornhole has been one of the most iconic tailgating games of all time. Cornhole may originated as far back as the 14th century! The classic game is still one of the most loved games at the tailgate, but we all have that friend that has a hard time getting it in the hole. How about tripling the amount of holes? This just happened and we show you more in this Triple Threat Cornhole review.
I love cornhole, it is one of my top go to games over the years. Many people know how to play and have played before, so it brings out come competitive juices. There are those players I know that can get it on the board, but they struggle to make it in the hole. This could be one reason why Triple Threat Cornhole will gain popularity, as there will be more chances to get it in the hole.
Instructions
- Each player throws alternating bags from behind the front of their board until they throw all 4 bags that round.
- A player can only score with their own bags that round. If you knock in an opposing teams bags there are NO points awarded, but if you knock one of your own bags in then the points will count.
- Ensure the boards are set 27 feet part from front to front.
Scoring
- Front right hole = 3 points
- Middle hole = 1 point
- Back left hole = 2 points
- There are NO points awarded for bags being on the board
Product Testing
It was time to set up the Triple Threat Cornhole boards and get the bags flying. Once the boards were measured out we started to toss the bags at our three holes. Honestly, I thought this game was going to be pretty easy, but it took some time to get into a flow with it. Getting bags on the board was pretty consistent, but remember this doesn’t result in any points.
As we played longer we got into some fun trick shots and having three holes makes some of the crazier trick shots have a 3X better rate of success:) Check out the video below to see more of these shots and game play.
One thing that could help newer players and move the game speed along would be to have an agreement that bags on the board could be counted for points. Then as you get better at the game this rule could be removed and you’re back on the traditional rules.
Other Ways to Play
Rules for 321 Game Play: This game is played with each player needing to make their own bags in each of the 3,2,1 holes 4 times to close out each of these holes. The first player/team to close out all three holes wins the game.
Rules for Triple Threat Baseball Game Play: There are 9 innings with each inning consisting of 2 rounds of 4 bags totaling 18 rounds per player/team. Scoring for this game will look like this:
-a bag that lands on the board is a single
-a bag that goes into the ‘1’ hole is a double
-a bag that goes into the ‘2’ hole is a triple
-a bag that goes into the ‘3’ hole is a home run
-any bag that misses the board is an OUT and 3 outs in 1 round ends the inning and they forfeit any additional bags.
-the bases are cleared each round
-the only way to advance a runner is a to make a bag in the hole, or greater than the base the runner is on, or a home run.
Rules for Triple Threat Football. There are 4 quarters and each quarter is 4 rounds of bags each totaling 16 rounds per player/team. Scoring for this game looks like this:
-a bag that goes in the ‘3’ hole is a TD
-a bag that goes in the ‘2’ hole is a FG
-if a player scores a TD, they can try their next bag for either the 1 hole for an extra point, or the 2 hole for the 2 point convesion.
-If a player makes 3 bags in the 1 hole in a round, they score a field goal for that round and get 3 points.
-if a player ends up with all 4 bags on the board at the end of the round, they score a safety for 2 points
Conclusion
While there were quite a few ways to play Triple Threat Cornhole we enjoyed the classic play and 321 the most. This game comes with a magnetic scoreboard that can help you keep track of points for all of these unique game.
PROS: multiple ways to play, 3 holes, magnetic scoreboard, ability to customize
CONS: some will argue that there is no substitute for the classic version of cornhole
Overall, this was a fun new way to play one of our favorite tailgating games. From new ways to play, or just finally having a chance for some of your friends to make it in the hole, Triple Threat Cornhole could be the game for you.
