I LOVE going to different breweries, it is my vice. I love tasting the local craft beers that these breweries pump out all across America. Some breweries sell their beer in bottles to you, so you can take your favorite on the road, but some only have their beer on tap. This is when you need a growler, so it can be filled up and enjoyed at a later time. The Growlerwerks growler is ready to bring your favorite craft beer home to enjoy when you’re ready.
The Growlerwerks growler comes in a 64 oz or 128 oz sizes. You can also get the finish in copper, stainless, chrome black or matte black.
The Growlerwerks growler boasts the following features:
uKeg – keep beer fresh and carbonated for two weeks.
VPR Cap – automatically regulates pressure to optimally carbonate beer. Choose desired carbonation level, from zero (off) up to 15 psi.
Vessel – durable, double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel.
Pressure Gauge – easily read the pressure inside the growler.
Dispenser Tap – easily pours beer any time, without removing cap. Plus taplock to prevent dispensing.
Interchangeable Tap Handle – handle can be changed to personalize or represent your favorite brewery.
Sight Glass – shows contents of uKeg and how much is left.
CO2 Cartridge – uses low cost, food-grade CO2 cartridges.
I got the 64 oz copper Growlerwerks uKeg and when it came in I took it out of the box and was amazed at just how dang good it looks. The copper color and piping makes this one beautiful growler. They also created a custom tap handle with our Tailgating Challenge logo in it! Looks are great, but it still has to perform. While exploring Fort Worth, TX area I came across Turning Point Brewing and the reviews state they make some amazing IPA’s. I pulled in and got a flight of 4 to test out. I was blown away at the quality and creativity they used with the four samples I had. I picked my favorite ‘A Nu Start’ and had them fill up the Growlerwerks uKeg. I then locked the tap handle. It has a lock so it won’t spill on the journey home.
I drove home and later that evening it was time to pour up some amazing beer. I unlocked the tap handle and pulled the handle. Out came some cold beer. You can adjust the PSI on the top of the cap and the PSI level is easily seen on the PSI guage at the bottom of the uKeg. I’ll say in using some other growlers in the past the CO2 has always been a little bit of a pain for it to pour just right. This is the easiest to use growler I’ve used so far in my beer journey.
As the beer continued to pour I was able to see how much beer was left in what I call the peep window. This is a great option that the other growlers I’ve used do not have. It always stinks to run out of beer and think you had another left. With this you will always know how much more beer there is in your growler.
The Growlerwerks growler also claims to keep beer carbonated and fresh for up to two weeks. I’m still working on FULLY testing this out, as it’s hard for me to keep beer in a growler for that long. I can say it keeps it fresh for the couple of days I’ve left it sitting and it’s still cold when I pour it. Remember too that the uKeg won’t make beer colder, so if the beer isn’t ice cold when it’s poured into the vessel then it won’t be ice cold when you pour it out.
PROS: easy to use, looks awesome, custom tap handles, peep window to see how much beer is left
CONS: hard to keep beer in this long enoug to test the 2 weeks of freshness claim:)
Overall, this is my favorite growler that I’ve used to date. It looks awesome and is easy to use. I’m going to keep this in the car with me in case I ever find myself at a local brewery and locate an amazing beer. If you are a beer nerd, like me, then it’s time to get a Growlerwerks uKeg and always be prepared when you stumble on great beer.
